Indicative – “something has changed” – alert to the operator to potentially upset conditions

Qualitative – “something may be about to change, can we anticipate?” – pollutants building up, lets take action before it gets critical, find and contain the source

Quantitative – “something is changing by a measurable amount” – need to know if within occupational exposure limits
