VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) detection works by using a photoionisation detector (PID). In simple terms the PID detectors ionise a small sample of the VOC gas using ultraviolet light. As the sample gives up the electrons it gained during ionisation the detector measures the flow of electrons, which is proportional to the amount of gas present. This can then be processed to provide a gas reading. Different VOC gases have different ionisation potentials. WFPToffers clients a 10.6 EV PID sensor which can measure 700+ VOC gases and vapours. Isobutylene is used as a safe stable calibration gas with cross calibration factors available to relate to the gas in question.
